Textures, colors and functionality felted into one! ...and it must all be fun! ....because handbags should be fun....is yours? The Felting Process Felting is a fascinating process! Beginning with the world’s finest wools, I hand knit every bag and accessory. The creative process starts with knitting one oversized item all in one piece. Sometimes three times the size of the finished product. Making felt begins with wool. Heat and moisture are added to cause the outer scales along the wool fiber to open. Use of soap allows the fibers to easily coil upon themselves, and agitation causes the fibers to interlock, creating a shrunken, irreversible bond of felted fabric. Then the item is hand stretched, shaped and dried. Once the item is dried, it is accentuated with an eclectic array of hand embroidery and decorations. Each design fuses the old and the new, producing a unique organic style right at home in a small town or the big city. Felt is a non-woven fabric, which will not unravel because the fibers have melded together. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind, heirloom quality creation. My handbag and accessory material is ¼” + thick, and nearly indestructible. It won’t sag or stretch, unless you’re carrying bricks in it! |
